Raised in a racing family, Todd Bodine had his career track laid out in front of him since birth – literally.
His parents owned the asphalt Chemung (NY) Speedway near Elmira, NY and Todd spent many a day and night there. But, his first racing adventures weren’t behind the wheel, but as a junior crew member at age 13 to older brother, Brett. The first time he went with him to a race, Todd watched Brett win a Street Stock feature at Perry (NY) Raceway. During this same time, their eldest brother, Geoff, was off winning Modified races at short tracks all over.
Once he was able to get behind the wheel at age 19, Todd took to the task and has kept the Bodine name in Victory Lane since.
At age 22, Todd made one NASCAR Nationwide Series for Tom Pistone at Martinsville Speedway in 1986. Four years later, he made another eight starts for Tom Conder before signing a full-time Nationwide deal with fellow Central New Yorker Frank Cicci in 1991.
That’s when Todd went on a rip. He and teammate Mike “Magic Shoes” McLaughlin, another New York state driver, were winning races and making headlines with great fanfare. Todd won his first of many Nationwide races in that first full year, doing so at Dover. And, the natural progression took Todd to the highest level of NASCAR racing - the Sprint Cup Series.
His first Cup start in 1992 came just down the road from his Chemung, NY home at Watkins Glen International. The Cicci-Welliver Racing No. 34 started 21st making 16 laps before getting crashed out to finish 37th. Making 10 starts the following year for Butch Mock Racing, Todd made the full-time move to Cup racing in 1993 earning two top-fives and seven top-10s in 30 starts.
During his 228 Cup career starts, Todd has earned seven top-fives, 21 top-10s and five pole awards. His last Cup start was in 2006 for the now-defunct Morgan McClure Racing.
Todd’s biggest achievements have occurred in the Nationwide and the Truck Series. During his 20 seasons of Nationwide Series competition, Todd has earned a very impressive 15 wins, 90 top-fives, 160 top-10s and seven pole awards in 324 starts. His best years were in 1992 and 1993 winning three times in each of those seasons to finish third and ninth in points. In 1996 and 1997, Todd finished third and second in points.
His most trying year was in 2003 driving for Herzog-Jackson Motorsports. After winning one race, earning six top-fives and 11 top-10s Todd and team were leading the Nationwide points. However, they ran out of money and had to disband the team after 18 of 33 races.
In September of 2004, Todd made a NASCAR Camping World Series start for the upstart team of Germain Racing at Richmond International Raceway. Starting third, Todd finished fourth in their No. 30 Toyota. He would make seven more starts for the team before signing on for a full-time deal in 2005.
The highlight of Todd’s career occurred in 2006 when he won the coveted NCWTS Championship. It was the first top-level NASCAR championship for any of the Bodine Brothers and a proud moment for all.
In 115 Truck starts, Todd has visited Victory Lane 15 times with 54 top-fives, 74 top-10s, four pole awards and finished in no worse than fourth in points the past four seasons. His racing prowess has been at the restrictor-plate tracks of Daytona and Talladega sweeping both in 2008.
If there is an exciting moment, edge-of-your seat battle or heated action; you can count on Todd to be part of them all. Finishing the 2008 season winning at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Todd and the No. 30 team are looking to pick up right where they left off this year.
